SUMMARY:CPV Member Meeting - February 2026
DESCRIPTION:CPV Membership Meeting Presentation\nNAVIGATING COGNITIVE CHALL
ENGES IN OUR AGING COLLABORATIVE CLIENTS\nPresented by: Michael L. Hendric
 ks\, Ph.D.\, ABPP\, Lisa Herrick\, PhD\, and Courtney McCarthy\, Esq.\nWed
 nesday\, February 18\, 2026\nNEW! 5:45 PM – 6:00 PM – Meet and Greet\n
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM\nWorking with clients on complex tasks while they feel g
rief\, resentment\, fear\, anger and/or a stew of all of the above is chal
lenging enough. When our clients show a range of cognitive deficits\, whet
her it is a byproduct of aging or other medical factors\, they may benefit
greatly from the supportive nature of a Collaborative process\, but the t
eam will need to adjust\, adapt\, and attune in different ways to help the
se individuals participate effectively. One challenge in a new case is ass
essing clearly what sort of deficits or difficulties a given client is exp
eriencing\, as well as how those difficulties might impact the client's pa
rticipation in the process. Will the client be able to remember prior disc
ussions? Will the client be able to organize documents - and thoughts? Wil
l the client need extra support from a family member and/or a caregiver th
roughout the process? What involvement should that extra support person ha
ve in the Team meetings\, if any? These questions and a whole host of othe
rs will be addressed during this program.\nDr. Hendricks will explore the
various types of cognitive decline\, including dementia\, and behaviors th
at clients may exhibit that could indicate a need for either accommodation
s or even a neuropsychological evaluation to determine whether the client
has sufficient capacity to proceed.\nCourtney McCarthy and Dr. Hendricks w
ill then provide examples of the various types of capacity that could come
into play\, as well as the types of evaluations that might be indicated.
Courtney McCarthy and Lisa Herrick will discuss their experiences working
with older clients showing cognitive impairment in previous Collaborative
cases and ways in which they and their teammates adapted the process to ma
 intain its integrity.\n\n\nMichael L. Hendricks\, Ph.D.\, ABPP is a Ph.D.
Psychologist licensed in Virginia\, Maryland\, and D.C. His practice inclu
des a mix of clinical psychotherapy and forensic evaluations\, and he is b
oard certified in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Hendricks is a fellow of the Am
