November CPNV Member Meeting
Working with Same-Sex Couples in Collaborative: Exactly the Same but Totally Different
Presented by: Michael McHugh, Esquire and Sean Maloney, LCSW
Guest Speaker: Sean is the founder of Forge & Form Therapy, a practice serving individuals and couples navigating high-stakes transitions. With nearly two decades in clinical social work—including leadership as Clinical Director at a leading private practice—Sean integrates psychodynamic depth with evidence-based methods grounded in trauma, attachment, and relational systems.
Description: This program will be an introduction to working with married and unmarried same-sex couples who are separating. Like their opposite-sex counterparts, same-sex couples often have a number of decisions to make, such as what to do with the house, how to divide their finances, how to co-parent their children, and they have all the same emotional issues of loss, anger, and fear that usually accompany opposite-sex divorce. But they also face an array of different legal and emotional challenges that their opposite-sex counterparts do not. Sean Maloney, LCSW, will explore the social and emotional differences gay and lesbian adults may experience in a divorce setting, including in relation to parenting concerns. Michael McHugh will discuss some of the legal challenges that separating same-sex couples may experience, as well as the legal and equitable differences that can come into play with longer term couples that may not have married or did not marry until they were legally able to do so in 2015.
