It’s a familiar scenario: One divorcing spouse has historically handled family finances, while the other is (or feels) less knowledgeable about money and has remained hands off.
As Collaborative Professionals, we are invested in leveling the playing field. This sometimes involves educating and empowering the hands-off spouse, while simultaneously helping the other to navigate anxieties associated with relinquishing the role of family CFO. Some clients take on the challenge with energy and agency. Other times, one or both spouses throw up emotional and practical obstacles to making shifts in the financial status quo.
In this presentation, we’ll learn about the relatively new legal and academic concept of Financial Abuse. We’ll place it in the context of Collaborative Practice by exploring the distinctions between Financial Abuse and other difficult financial marital “dances,” and discuss practical implications for our work.
We’ll consider questions like:
- What is Financial Abuse?
- How do we distinguish abuse from other tricky financial dynamics?
- What are implications for accepting/not accepting a case into Collaborative?
- What should teams keep in mind when working with challenging, but “in the bell curve” financial dynamics?
